The Panavia Tornado is a family of twin-engine, variable-sweep wing multirole combat aircraft, which was jointly developed and manufactured by Italy, the United Kingdom, and West Germany. There are three primary Tornado variants: the Tornado IDS (interdictor/strike) fighter-bomber, the suppression of enemy air defences Tornado ECR (electronic combat/reconnaissance) and the Tornado ADV (air defence variant) interceptor aircraft.

Within "Shattered Union", despite its multirole design, the Panavia Tornado appears exclusively as an air-to-air combat unit. It is one of two fighter aircraft brought to North America by the European Union peacekeeping force.

Analysis Edit

The Tornado is a capable fighter and interceptor, but one that has been simply outclassed by newer and better aircraft. A Tornado can fight effectively against the comparable Super Hornet, but the Super Hornet has 2 more hit points and an AA attack of 17, making the Tornado the least-capable fighter jet in the game. Against the JSF and the MiG-35 Interceptor, the Tornado will be at a considerable disadvantage. Additionally, its lower stats leave it more vulnerable to being shot down by enemy fire.

If it survives to achieve the first or second level of veteran status in the game, the Tornado will become a more formidable aircraft, gaining hit points. A veteran Tornado does not have a greater attack rating, but is more likely to survive, even against newer and better fighters.

Overall, the Tornado is a good last-generation fighter that can't match the performance of modern jets like the JSF, Typhoon, and MiG-35. For a player controlling the EU faction in campaign or skirmish mode, the Tornado's sole advantage over the Typhoon is that it costs $17,000 less.
